Active cases rise to 120 in Elgin, Oxford region Tuesday

Active cases in the Southwestern public health region rose to 120 on Tuesday with 13 new cases reported by the health unit.

Active COVID-19 cases in the Oxford and Elgin counties region climbed to 120, the health unit reported Tuesday.

The 13 new cases reported Tuesday by Southwestern public health were partially offset by eight recoveries. Still, active cases topped 110 this week for the first time in more than six weeks, as local health officials cautioned residents to maintain physical distancing and stay home whenever possible as the province imposed a shutdown to curb the spread of the virus.

There have been 2,898 cases of the virus in the region to date.

Of the area’s active 120 cases, 69 are in Oxford County, including 34 in Woodstock, 13 in Ingersoll and 11 in Tillsonburg.

There are 27 cases in St. Thomas and 11 in Aylmer. Dutton-Dunwich, Malahide, East Zorra-Tavistock and Zorra each have three cases.

Public health als reported 92 cases of COVID-19 variants of concern in the region, of which 27 are now ongoing.

Dr. Joyce Lock, medical officer of health, said March 31 that 20,000 residents in the region had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Public health reported that 1.9 per cent of residents in the Oxford and Elgin counties region are fully vaccinated.

There are currently three people in hospital with the virus, including one person in intensive care. There is also one active institutional outbreak in the region, at Caressant Care Bonnie Place in St. Thomas. There are two cases reported, one staff and one resident.

The Thames Valley District school board reported a new COVID-19 case at Hickson public school, joining cases at Algonquin public school, Central public school, College Avenue secondary school, Roch Carrier French Immersion public school and Southside public school. Central public school is currently closed.
