The Oxford Attack under-15 midget girls’ basketball team finished their season April 27 to 29 with a silver at the Ontario Basketball Association Ontario Cup provincial finals in Oshawa.
They entered provincials ranked second in their division and went 2-1 in the round robin to continue to the playoff round.
Oxford opened the tournament with a 37-32 loss to the Niagara Falls Red Raiders, but bounced back with a pair of wins starting with a 48-28 victory against Woodbridge Basketball and then 40-34 over third ranked Orillia Basketball.
They began their playoffs with a narrow 42-39 win versus the division’s top ranked Advantage Titans, who went undefeated in their round robin. The win saw them advance to the finals, where they fell 51-43 to Motion Basketball to earn silver at provincials.
Coaches Jon Empringham and Roger Hall both said via email they extremely proud of the team’s effort all season and are excited for the 2018-19 OBA season.
The Attack girls completed their season with a 19-3 record, while ending ranked 18th in the province at their age group.
Last season they won gold in Division 8 and were ranked 57th to see a nearly 40 spot jump in the rankings.
The core of the Attack girls team has been together for only a few years and the team saw key additions join the fold to improve the team’s overall game. Throughout the season, the under-15 squad earned a reputation for their speed, running well in transition, overall team defence and being competitive as a determined team on the court.
They also won gold at the Guelph CYO tournament and silver at the Brantford CYO tournament, both OBA sanctioned events. They also went undefeated in the Ontario Basketball League.
